Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (1900–1949) was an American novelist and journalist best known for her only completed novel, Gone with the Wind. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Mitchell developed a passion for Southern history and storytelling at a young age. After attending Smith College, she returned home following the death of her mother and eventually became a reporter for the Atlanta Journal Sunday Magazine. In the mid-1920s, while recovering from an injury, she began writing Gone with the Wind, a sweeping historical romance set in Georgia during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Published in 1936, the novel became a massive bestseller, earning her the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. The story was famously adapted into the 1939 film, which remains a landmark in cinematic history. Despite her literary success, Mitchell published no other novels. She died tragically in 1949 after being struck by a car in Atlanta, but her work continues to captivate readers worldwide.
