George Raymond Richard Martin, often referred to by his initials GRRM, is an American novelist, screenwriter, and producer best known for creating A Song of Ice and Fire, the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones. Born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Martin began writing at a young age and earned degrees in journalism from Northwestern University. He worked as a TV writer in the 1980s and 1990s before returning to fiction with the groundbreaking A Game of Thrones in 1996. Known for his intricate plots, morally complex characters, and brutal realism, Martin reinvigorated the fantasy genre by subverting traditional tropes. He has also authored science fiction, horror, and graphic novels, and edited anthologies like Wild Cards. Martin has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for decades, where he supports local arts through his Jean Cocteau Cinema and nonprofit work. He continues to work on future volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire, including the long-awaited The Winds of Winter.
