Cassandra Clare, the pen name of Judith Rumelt, is a New York Times best-selling author best known for her expansive Shadowhunter Chronicles, which includes The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices, and The Last Hours series. Born on July 27, 1973, in Tehran, Iran, to American parents, Clare had a peripatetic childhood, living in countries such as Switzerland, England, and France before settling in the United States. She worked as a journalist and fan fiction writer before publishing her debut novel, City of Bones, in 2007. Clare quickly gained a devoted fanbase for her immersive urban fantasy world filled with demon hunters, forbidden love, and layered mythologies. Her books have sold millions of copies and have been adapted into both film and television. Known for her lyrical writing and emotionally complex characters, Clare continues to expand the Shadowhunter universe while also working on new adult fantasy projects. She currently resides in Massachusetts with her husband and three cats.
